The One Thing Plain ROI Doesn't Tell You: Time

A 45% ROI sounds identical whether it took six months or fifteen years to achieve — but those are wildly different outcomes in practice. Earning 45% in six months is an extraordinary result; earning the same 45% spread across fifteen years works out to a fairly modest annual return, and might actually underperform a boring fixed deposit once you account for how long your money was tied up.
Whenever you're comparing two investments with different holding periods, plain ROI on its own can be actively misleading. The tricky part in practice is accurately attributing which sales genuinely came from the campaign versus sales that would have happened anyway, which is why marketing ROI numbers deserve a healthy amount of scrutiny before being treated as gospel.
Equipment and Capital Purchases
A new machine that costs ₹8,00,000 but saves ₹3,00,000 a year in labor and reduces waste can be evaluated on ROI over its expected working life — three years of savings against the purchase cost gives a clear, comparable figure to weigh against other uses for that same ₹8,00,000.
Hiring Decisions
A less obvious but genuinely useful application — the "return" on a new hire's annual salary can be measured against the revenue or cost savings they're expected to generate, giving a rough but useful gut-check on whether a role pays for itself within a reasonable timeframe.

Include All the Costs, Not Just the Purchase Price
Brokerage fees, transaction charges, and — for property specifically — registration costs, stamp duty, and maintenance expenses over the holding period should all be folded into your "investment" figure for an honest ROI. ROI vs IRR — When You Need a More Sophisticated Number
Plain ROI works well when money goes in once and comes out once, at a single point in the future. It gets less precise once cash flows in and out at multiple points along the way — a rental property that generates monthly income while also requiring occasional repair costs, or a business that receives several rounds of investment over time. For situations like these, finance professionals often reach for IRR (Internal Rate of Return), which accounts for the exact timing of every individual cash inflow and outflow rather than collapsing everything into a single beginning and a single end.
For most everyday small business and personal finance decisions, though, plain ROI — paired with a simple annualization when comparing different holding periods — is more than sufficient, and considerably easier to calculate and explain than IRR without specialized financial software.
Setting a Target ROI Before You Invest
Rather than only calculating ROI after the fact to see how something performed, it's worth deciding on a minimum acceptable ROI before committing money in the first place — a threshold the opportunity needs to clear to be worth the risk and effort involved. This target should generally scale with risk: a low-risk option like a fixed deposit might only need to beat inflation by a modest margin to be worthwhile, while a higher-risk venture like a new product launch or a speculative stock pick should be expected to clear a meaningfully higher bar, since it's competing against safer alternatives that could deliver a decent return with far less uncertainty.
