How Trip Fuel Cost Is Calculated

Fuel Needed = Distance / Mileage
Fuel Cost = Fuel Needed × Price per Litre

For example, imagine a 300 km road trip in a car that averages 15 km/l, with petrol priced at ₹100 per litre. Fuel needed works out to 300 ÷ 15 = 20 litres, and the total fuel cost comes to 20 × 100 = ₹2,000 for the trip.

Real Mileage Varies

Actual mileage depends on traffic, driving style, AC use, and load — city driving typically gives lower mileage than highway driving. Use your vehicle's real-world average rather than the manufacturer's claimed figure for a more accurate estimate. A typical mistake we often see is using a car's advertised mileage figure (often measured under ideal test conditions) instead of real-world mileage, which tends to be noticeably lower, especially in stop-and-go city traffic with the air conditioner running.

How to Find Your Vehicle's Real Mileage

The most reliable way to know your actual mileage is tracking it yourself over a full tank. Fill up completely, note the odometer reading, drive normally until the tank is empty or you refill again, and divide the distance covered by the litres used to refill. Doing this over two or three tanks, rather than just one, gives a more representative average, since a single tank might include an unusually high proportion of highway or city driving that skews the number.

Splitting Fuel Costs Fairly on a Shared Trip

One common scenario: a group of friends splits a road trip's fuel cost, but not everyone travels the full distance — someone joins partway or leaves early. A fairer approach than simply splitting the total cost equally is calculating the cost per kilometre (fuel cost ÷ total distance) and charging each person based on the distance they actually travelled in the vehicle. This avoids the situation where someone who only rode for a third of the trip ends up paying the same as someone who rode the entire way.

Comparing Running Costs Between Vehicles

Let's say you're deciding between two vehicles and want to compare their fuel running costs. Imagine Vehicle A gets 18 km/l and Vehicle B gets 22 km/l, both running on petrol at ₹100 per litre, and you drive roughly 1,000 km a month. Vehicle A costs roughly ₹5,556 a month in fuel, while Vehicle B costs roughly ₹4,545 — a difference of over ₹1,000 a month, or well over ₹12,000 a year, purely from the mileage difference. This kind of comparison is especially useful when weighing a slightly pricier, more fuel-efficient vehicle against a cheaper but thirstier one, since the fuel savings can offset a higher upfront cost over time.
